Meeting Description :

A tribute to André Basset

Berber was first taught at INALCO in 1913. Ever since, a lot of people have
had the honor to contribute to the transmission of this language to students.
André Basset was one of them. His career began in a Berber territory, namely,
at the Faculté des Lettres d’Alger. It was only in 1940 that he came to work
for l’Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes (ex-INALCO), where he
took over from Edmond Destaing. André Basset’s studies significantly
contributed to Berber linguistics, being the first to have introduced the
methods of modern linguistic. Berber studies are indebted for the work of this
great Berber researcher. Indeed, some linguistic descriptions of Berber
varieties by André Basset, are the only accounts that we have on them.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t complete his project since he died in 1956 while
still in office.

For the commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of André Basset’s death, we
would like pay a tribute to the man and his work via a scientific conference.
This will be the first biennial international conference on Berber
linguistics.
