Meeting Description :
Yi scripture is an important part of China’s national cultural heritage, due to its significant characteristics as well as its great academic value. Thus, the study of Yi scriptures is believed to contribute to both national cultural conservation and resurgence of ethnic cultures in China.
From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, many western missionaries, scholars, and travelers visited the southwest China. During their stay in the Yi area, they collected a great number of Yi scriptures and took away them back to their home countries. For over one hundred years, most of these Yi scriptures have “slumbered” in the museums or libraries of foreign countries except a minority of them were published in China or abroad. Depressingly, these overseas Yi scriptures have hardly been known by outsiders. Inasmuch as the background mentioned, we would like to convene this conference aimed to “rediscover” the Yi scriptures that were dispersed overseas from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. We strongly encourage scholars to make efforts to do an integrity study on overseas Yi scriptures, including Yi scripture data retrieve, documentation, photocopy, film, and text research as well.
