Meeting Description :

The Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, in cooperation with Linguistics Institute at the Russian Academy of Sciences, University of Salzburg and Charles University Eastern European Institute, invite researchers to take part in the International Research and Practice Conference entitled “Crossing Boundaries : Intercultural Communication in a Global Context.”

The conference will be held February 14-16, 2018, at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute.
The dynamics of sociocultural changes in the modern global world reveal the diversity in the way intercultural communication exists in a multiethnic environment. The conference is expected to consider the most acute and dynamic processes taking place in Russian and other language cultures, through the prism of today’s research approaches, formed in different countries and in line with different scientific schools and trends. In particular, we will be focusing on the culture theory, cultural differences, modern technologies in intercultural communication, as well as digital communication.
The aim of the conference is to achieve ’’methodological understanding’’ between researchers in the field of intercultural communication.
The working languages of the conference will be Russian and English.
The form of participation in the conference is full-time.

The topics will include :

- The Methodological basis of Intercultural Communication
— The terminology of intercultural communication : intercultural – transcultural, linguistic and cultural studies (Russian : “Р»Ð¸Ð½Ð²Ð¾Ñ трановедение”) – cultural linguistics (Russian : “Р»Ð¸Ð½Ð³Ð²Ð¾ÐºÑƒÐ »ÑŒÑ‚уроР»Ð¾Ð³Ð¸Ñ ”), etc.
— Anthropological theories and their role and place in intercultural communication
— The role of modern technologies in intercultural communication : working with parallel text corpora, psycholinguistic experiments, tests, surveys, included observations, self-descriptions, etc.
— Cultural quotient (CQ) : ways to measure and test it
— Technologies for predicting errors related to cultural interference

- Russian language culture in comparison with other language cultures : universal vs culturally specific in language and communication
— Cross-cultural description of lexical concepts, phraseological units, formulas for speech etiquette ; translation issues
— Non-verbal semiotics in the aspect of intercultural communication : gestures, facial expressions, behaviors
— International communication “hot spots” and the typology of communication failures
— The image of “otherness” or “foreign-ness” in Russian language culture in comparison with other language cultures ; ethnic stereotypes and the particularity of how they function in the modern world

- Russian language culture in comparison with other language cultures : a cross-cultural analysis of literary and film texts
- Bilingualism and intercultural communication
- The linguodidactic aspect of intercultural communication

Plenary papers will last 30 minutes. Sectional papers will last 20 minutes.

Call for Papers :

Those interested in participating in the conference as speakers must fill out the application and attach the abstracts of their reports (please see Appendix 1 for an example of a submission of an abstract) by October 1, 2017 on the following website : http://www.pushkin.institute/science/konferencii/peresekaya_granicy/.
Participants will receive a notification of acceptance of materials for publication (materials are accepted in both Russian and English) until October 10, 2017. Detailed information on the procedure of the conference will be sent in the second call for papers together with the event program.

All participants of the conference must pay the organizational fee upon receiving notification that their report will be included in the conference program. The registration fee is 3000 rubles and must be paid by cash at the Accounts Department at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute during the Conference.

All the abstracts will be included in the Russian Science Citation Index database and published as an electronic collection by the beginning of the Conference.

Participation in the conference is free of charge for graduate students.
Travel and accommodation is paid at the expense of the sending party.
